Loud bang!!!
I was going home from the gym and as I pulled away from a stop light I made a left hand turn moving at a slow speed ( normal driving) and I heard what sounded like peebles in a tin can rattle come from the rear of the car followed by a loud bang as if the car ran something over! Could this be something in the rear slipping?? It's rwd and about 27 degrees outside. I tried to duplicate it but it won t do it again. Has anyone experienced this??

Sounds like a rock got caught inside the wheels, spun inside a bit and then got ejected somewhere probably hitting something metal like the struts or rotor. Should be no biggie, I've had that happen to me a couple times and freaked me out at first, but you can always do a visual inspection and see if anything looks out of place!

I ran over a tree branch the other day, it kicked under my car so hard I felt the bang in my drivers seat. As long as it drives without any weird noise i wouldn't worry too much. Keep in mind warranty only good if it brakes on its own, if they can prove its physical damage (hitting curb, taking a hammer hitting it etc etc) then you are out of luck.

^^^ I didn t hit anything I even turned around and made sure that nothing fell off of the car, the noise was like the rear jumped into gear almost like a transmission would do when it catches after it slipped the only difference is that I didn t feel a slip just heard the rattle and then BOOM!!!!! like it caught. Crazy!!!

Hey, get your own jokes. :P
If it was slipping (wheel hop) you probably would have heard multiple bangs in rapid succession. Anyway, I assume you've been checking under your car for leaks after parking since. If nothing is leaking, looks missing, and it drives fine I guess just forget about it for now. Happened to me once, but I think it was wheel hop on sand that lasted a second... multiple rapid jolts. All seemed well afterwards but it bothered me since I didn't think AWD should really get wheel hop.

I just talked to my service advisor that keeps it pretty real with me and he told me that this is not an uncommon symptom in Toyota/Lexus products in extremely cold temps. The rear diff will slip, he told me they have experienced it in some of the loaner vehicles. If my problem continues I'll take it in!! I probrably won t be driving it for awhile anyway it's supposed to snow today and this weekend so they will be spreading 60 billion tons of salt and other chemicals on the road for 1 inch of snow. Won't be taking my car out in those conditions with my shaved fenders and hacked up wheel well plastics! I'm moving somewhere south I'm depressed when I can t drive my car and women have layers of clothes on!!!

If Lexus is aware of this, wonder why they have not made changes to the rear diff. Surely this is not helping with the longevity of the diff....
In warm temperatures one does not hear any bang at all when the rear looses grip for a fraction of a second. Just experienced this a week ago in a wet tight hairpin curve on 2nd gear, when exiting the corner.
Another source of a loud bang (surely not applicable to this case though) can happen when a small piece of rock is stuck in between the tire thread and is finally released when the wheel spins fast enough. If the rock hits inside the wheel well, it sounds like someone is shooting your car. Truly shocking, when heard at first time. Happened to me only once in the last 10 years - at 70 mph - so it is very rare.
