I'm picking up my new 2007 GS350 this weekend. It should come with the 7.1 disc since it was an august 2007 build, right?
What are the downsides to doing the "hardware" hack (cutting wires to allow using the phone and nav while in motion)?

I did not do the hack until I owned the car for about 4 months, to make sure everything was working OK.

I wouldn't think so. 7.1 disc was released Oct. 1st or so. Yours was built august, two month before that. But I could be wrong...

BUT IF YOU HAVE THE OLD 5.1 LIKE I DO, even though I did the CUTTING, I would still lose the touch screen hack for the enter destinations.
I never minded doing the little finger dance to input destinations. BUT if I upgrade, unless I add a switch, I will lose that feature.
I WON't however lose the watching movies while moving, B/C I cut the wires for that.
Just wanted to clarify in case there were any questions.

Mini Review
So here's my mini review of the update. Make sure you order the correct CD, I used the link on the first page and it actually links to an older version, not the version for a Gen 5 nav. If you open it they won't take it back, but I have found another buyer so it’s no big deal.
First, there are a few minor differences. On the map view when you change the points of interest you now have an option to do local points of interest only which is very cool. I disliked how when in the middle of no where you would get points of interest 50+ miles away.
There are also lots of POI icon updates for chains. Chain gas stations, Starbucks, and fast food chains now have many more of their own icons.
Road and business data is much newer, but at least eight months old. Some difficult to navigate intersections seem to have better directions. This may be just my area (St. Louis, MO), but some are major improvements. Roundabouts are actually called out now, and intersections that join multiple (five and six way intersections) now say "second right" instead of "slight right." I actually downgraded to confirm the difference and it is in fact much easier to follow with the 7.1 version.
I do seem to get more slight rights than I used to, but this could be my imagination. I've noticed this on exits that are parallel to a highway or interstate for a significant distance. The three I’ve used now say slight right instead of exit right. I honestly do not like this change, but the other changes are good.
Yes, the wire cut nav bypass still works as I have done both and everything still works. If you have a Vaistech, you will need to disable the auto accept feature otherwise the map will set focus on a location of relative distance of the accept button press. (push scan 8 times then push and hold the repeat button until it long beeps).
I’ve also tried the old 5.1 finger dance to enter destinations on the fly and it’s not made a return.

I'm amazed "toothy" didn't make a comment on why I didn't post here yet.
I'm glad they updated with Hawaii. But unless Lexus got a gold heart and allowed me to swap out my car for the difference, I quit wanting the new car. I spent my left over cash on a new home audio setup. I figure spending $5k on that is more worth it than upgrading for new side mirrors and a nav system in the car.
And to answer a back post, nav isn't illegale (sp?) in Hawaii, jsut that Hawaii Lexus never had it for Hawaii cars.
