Default Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal/Install

Hi all,

First time working on a Lexus and could use some help. (Btw, 2003 Lexus GS430 4.3L) Replacing alternator and had to get alternator out but power steering pulley was in way. Tried to get it off and it ended up breaking. I can get a replacement but am a little confused on removal and installation. Using a power steering pulley removal tool, it hooks onto a groove on the pulley to pull it off, but on this pulley there is no groove; it is smooth.

Anybody have a trick to removing it and getting the tool to stay on? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

holy crap stop everything right now!!!!!!! your power steering pulley is held on by a splined shaft with a nut. the nut has to be removed than the pulley just comes right off. maybe a little bit of nudging but it will come off. the best way to get the nut loose is to use an air impact because the instant torque will bust it loose before the pulley even moves.

Appreciate the fast response. But I have to give myself a little more credit than that.

Nut came off no problem, and I saw the splines and thought what you thought, but it would not slide off. I tried wd-40, heat, tapping it at different angles, and pulling it but it would not budge. Eventually it cracked and am at where I am now.

I now have the splined center of the pulley still on the pump and I need to get it off so I can replace the pulley. Once I have it off, how do I get the new pulley on? Slide it on and torque the nut?

Eager to hear your thoughts, thank you.

yes once you some how manage to get the rest of the pulley off than the new pulley should go on. but it seems like you might have a rust problem on the splined shaft. wd40 the crap out of it and wire brush the rust before installing the new pulley. it literally should just go right on. no force required. but than again the old pulley should have also just come right off.
