Default 99 2jzge cam seal vvti question please help!!!

Ok so i have a cam seal leak on the exhaust valve side. Im new to this engines. Now my question is: is there some special way to remove the vvti cam gear? From what i understand i have to remove both of them and i have to remove the plate behind them and can pull them out and reinstall them fron there. We have all the tools. Hopefully. Lol. If anyone has a write up of removing them or doing the cam seals on vvti 2j i would appriciate it!!

Ps i have looked for days on how to and no luck. Only find cam gear oring and cam seals for non vvti 2j. Any help or advice would be appriciated. Doing the cam seals tomorrow. Going to be doing a write up with lots of pictures!! Or do you think a video would be better

I recently did this on the GTE motor, but I believe it should be the same. Seal on intake cam is same as seal on exhaust. Not sure why you're saying you can't find the seals, did you try Lexus?

Put permanent marks on your timing belt and gears (crank and both cams) so that you put it back just as it was when you took it off. It's always wise to put the engine at TDC before disassembly

I used the tension from the timing belt (while still on) to break the cam bolts loose with an impact wrench

There is a large hex needed to remove the cap on the end of the intake cam. Be ready ready with a rag, as a good bit of oil will come out. There's a slightly smaller hex behind this cap that is the bolt that holds the cam gear on.

Exhaust cam is just a bolt.

After removing them, there is the black shield ready to be taken off.

To remove the seals, I recommend the following off Amazaon. It came recommended and worked great: Lisle 58430 Shaft Type Seal Puller.

If you're in there, might consider replacing both while you're at it, and anything else that's been there a while - timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc. It's really not too bad. The most important thing is to keep things organized and mark your timing so when you put it back together you get it timed correctly.

I was going to refer you to Kyle because I know he just did this, and he showed up! Awesome post again. I'll post a link below, found on a supra forum. It is recommended that you replace the o ring for the cam gear as well. Basically for the cam gear removal you undo one bolt holding down the gear cap, and then there is another bolt inside there that loosens the cam gear right out.

Yes excellent info! They are on Ebay, but I would buy them from Jeff on here first to support our local friend. Here is his profile link below: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/members/39094-jefftsai.html
