Wheel bearing questions
What's up guys, I have a wrecked black GS, and a beater silver GS that's needing some work done. Silver GS needs rotors and brakes, as well as wheel bearings. I will be using the black GS for parts.
2 days prior to my black GS getting hit, I had gotten new rotors and brakes, so I'll be using those on my silver one. The question that I have is in regards of the wheel bearings. I know to replace the real wheel bearings you need a press. So what I was thinking of doing is just removing the entire assembly off of the black GS... That is wheel hub, and the thing it's attached too. That way I don't have to worry about having to press anything in I don't know the proper name, so I don't know what to search for here. The black gs has low mileage, that's why I'm even considering doing this.
Anyone have DIY or a can shed some insight on how to do this? Thanks in advance. Also it's nice to see the GS community is still putting in work.

You're thinking of the steering knuckle.
The job is pretty easy and can be done in about 20 minutes, depending on how fast you work.
Once wheel is removed:
Remove brake caliper (12mm I think)
Remove caliper bracket (14mm I think)
Remove brake rotor
Remove speed sensor (10mm)
Now remove the cotter pin and castle nut that connects the upper control arm to the top of the knuckle (I believe its a 14mm). You'll need a pitman puller to remove the joint from the spindle (rent for free from autozone, or buy for $10 bucks at harbor freight) OR take a hammer to it, but I dont like that idea. This nut is 87ft/lbs
PITMAN PULLER:
Remove 2 bolts (I believe they're also 14mm) that are under the spindle/steering knuckle that attach the lower ball joint to the knuckle. These bolts are 87ft/lbs
Those are the only 3 bolts holding the knuckle to the joints. The one on top and the 2 on the bottom. Once those 3 are off, lift the knuckle off the lower ball joint (because it sits on 1/8" shim guides) and pull off. It weighs about 20lbs, so hold tight.
Reverse the process and you're done.

I believe your talking about the steering knuckle. You have to unbolt the brake caliper and support it off to the side, u can keep the rotors on if those are the ones your swapping over to the other car. Disconnect the upper and lower ball joints and it should come right off. You also need to carefully disconnect the abs sensor, they're expensive if you break it.

Thanks for the replies guy.. What up Nathan, very nice detailed guide 8)
For the rear, I remove the brake caliper, removed the rotor, and removed some big 32MM bolt that;s in the middle of the wheel hub.. Is there anything else I need to remove? Or should it just come off? I tried wiggling but no luck. It got dark so I couldn't see anything else. Want to have an idea before i tackle it in a few hours. Thanks again.

Its a very similar job to the front, just more components that need to be released. After removing the wheel and brake components, you need to remove the upper control arm nut, lower control arm, toe link, lateral control arm . Circled are the bolts that need to come off:
You'll need a pitman puller for the toe link and upper control arm again. Dont forget to remove the parking brake cable and speed sensor. Also, try to mark the camber bolt so you can put it back exactly where it was. Thats the bolt holding the hub to the lower control arm (#48194A on the picture), you'll see the markings on it. Either way, I'd recommend taking it in for alignment after doing this.

OK, so my 2nd attempt at doing this. I can't remove the rear upper control arm with the pitman. There isn't any space to put the pitmall puller... Do I just take a hammer to it?
