Door check replacement - 99 gs400
Anybody know how to replace the door check on a 99 gs400?
Here's where I'm at.. I can take the driver side door panel off. No need to explain that. I just replaced the master switch. Door check was noisy.. used the wd40 trick. Got rid of the noise, but now the door doesnt check up.
So I get the door panel off and then what?? Looks like you remove the speaker and can access the check mechanism. Is that true? Guessing it would be best to work with the window up.
The other part I'm not sure of is the other end, that attaches to the body. Unscrew the bracket and replace the bracket too? Is the nut loose behind or welded to the body? And finally, looks like there is a roll pin holding the check arm onto the body bracket. Does the replacement door check already have the roll pin in place, or do I need to remove the old and/or install a new pin into the existing bracket? If so, whats the best way to deal with the roll pin. Thanks!

Well, I got tired of waiting for a reply, so I ventured off on my own. Replacing the door check was easy. Not cheap, but after it was done, the door stopped closing on its own, and worked like brand new again. Worth it if you can afford the part.
Here's what I did for the driver side front door:
1) Lower the window and remove the door panel.
2) Raise the window.
3) Remove the speaker. You can leave it hanging by the wires.
4) Remove the two nuts above and below the door check rod.
5) Remove the plastic cover from the door check bracket on the body/door opening.
6) Tap the roll pin from below with a hammer to remove it. I had to use a pliers to finish taking it out. Pay attention to how the pin looks. It has different shoulders top and bottom.
7) Pull the door check out thru the speaker opening.
8) Reverse the steps to finish the job.
Dealer sold me the nuts and pin in addition to the door check. You should only need the door check itself.
