Oil change maintenance
I recently brought my ES350 for an 10k oil change at a Lexus dealership! I was charged $75 for a freaking oil change!!
Can anyone recommend of an economical alternative to servicing it at a Lexus dealership?
- Can I bring it to a Toyota dealership and possibly get the same service for half the price??
- Also, if I was inclined to make it a DIY project, is it fairly easily to change the oil and just purchase the oil and filter from AutoZone?
Please share your thoughts...

Go to your local walmart, target, costco, etc and pick up a case of your favorite synthetic oil, I like Mobil 1. ~$35
Buy oil filter $5-10 depending on what brand, make, etc. I use Toyota.
Go to a local shop you trust and pay them $10-15 to change it OR you can do it yourself. My guy charges me $12 bucks and he rotates my tires for free.

i work at a toyota dealer and we a service lexus vehicles....they ARE toyotas and use all the same filters...theyre not hard to do an oil change on...
like lexgrl said, take it to a good local shop with your own parts and they wont charge you much...
i use mobil 1 5w30 fully synthetic and toyota filters in my ES every 3k, but you can get whatever oil you want. The toyota dealer will sell the filter for your ES as the camry, avalon, highlander, rav 4 or anything with the 3.5 V6 share that same filter.

Synthetics are great...no need for every 3K...that's a waste. Run 0W-30 you'll understand after reading the article. Everything you wanted to know about oil and more. Plenty of myths are put to rest

Paid 57 out the door at toyota for oil, top fluids, rotate tires (10K mile maintenance) but I brought my own oil at a toyota dealership

$75 bucks for an oil change? How about $165 here in California (Longo Lexus or Lexus of Riverside) for a 50,000 mile service which is essentially an oil change + tire rotation.
It is definitely cheaper to do this on your own if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. Independent shops would be the way to go.

Except for the first freebie at the dealer I've always changed my own oil. The ES350 is very easy to change and I do it without raising the car in any way.
I don't use the plastic drain they provide - I just put an oil wrench on the canister and pull the whole thing.
Detailed directions can be found by searching this forum.
I use Mobil 1 every 5,000 miles and a Toyota filter (same part number).

my dealer normally charges $44.95 or something like that, and sends out coupons for $29.95, so if you always get the oil changed there you get it for $29.95.
Best money you will ever spend, you can sit and use thier computers or watch tv or a personal DVD, have some starbucks coffee and muffins.
Nowadays you can barely buy the oil and filter for $30 so its money well spent.
If your using synthetic oil in the car your wasting your money, regular oil changed often will allow that car to run well past 200k, no need for synthetic, and if your insisting on synthetic then dont complain!

I am considering changing it myself for the next on. The question I have .. is there a trick to how tight the new filter be should done and the nut for draining oil ?
Thanks.

torque specs
the oil filter box lists the specs at approx 10 ft-lbs for the plug in the cnister and about 20 ft-lbs for the canister itself. my local dealer seems to tighten it beyond the recommended based on the fact i can barely get it loosened when they do it but its much easier when i do it per the torque specs. obviously you'll need a torque wrench to complete the oil change unless you just guess on the tightness
