New Key Won't Turn
Hello All -- just found this forum and hope someone can provide some advice.
My key fob was cracking (not the first time) and I ordered a new blank online like I have in the past. I moved to a new area, so went to a new locksmith to get the key portion duplicated. I knew the battery in the remote was low, so asked if they could change that at the same time.
The guy cut the new key and when he tried it, it didn't seem to work, so he came back in several more times and then grabbed a new fob and started over. This time he came back in and said "your problem is your ignition is locked up, that's why the fob broke." I responded that it wasn't prior to when I came in.
He then tried the key that I brought in - same thing as the new key - the key turns on the power, but locks and wont go far enough to crank the engine.
So basically, neither key - old or new will do anything but power on the car. The key works in the door lock fine.
He tried lubricating the ignition, making sure the car was solidly in park, put it in neutral then back to park, tried moving the steering wheel (steering wheel is not locked), tried rocking the car a bit - nada, zilch. Then he started to try and take the car apart to get at the ignition before it got too late and we called it quits for the night.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Have you programmed the chip?
Greetings:
You didn't mention if the chip in the new key had been programmed. The cut part of the key is obviously okay if it opens the door and turns on the ignition. Does it also open the glove box and the pass through to the trunk?

Thanks Vic.
The new key was just the casing, so the "guts" of the key just get transferred from the old casing to the new. The battery was replaced, so not sure if that would be cause for reprogramming, would hope not.

Does the security light stop flashing when you put the original key in the ignition?

It sounds like the immobilizer was ticked on.
there is a reset method to lexus vehicles
stick the original key in the drivers door and lock/unlock it. then try again.
if that doesn't work you should try sitting in the driver's seat, press the lock button on the door, unlock it with the key, then try the ignition.
Hope this works for you.
