either fit the suspension and run smaller rims, or don't fit the suspension. - hope that was helpful.

or use spacers

225 series tires are too wide for the back of the ES with stock suspension setup.

You'll need to run spacers and roll your fenders to make sure the rims don't rub.

Nice car BTW

I use a 215 tire with a 5mm spacer in the rear and I have no issues. I'm almost positive my rim width is 7.5

215 is the right tire to use. If your matching the overall diameter of the stock wheels, you need 215/50/17. Depending on the tire manufacturer, some will work without spacers and some won't, in which case a 3mm or 5mm works fine without extending the lugs.

The 4ES and 5ES use a 17x7" rim.

Two things;
1. I LOVE your car. Seriously, what a beautiful example, that was my goal for mine, but I sold it...

2. I think the offset is killing you. The 7.5 et42 is tight, a 5mm spacer SHOULD do it.

I used to run 18x8 ET 40, with 225 and I had ~6-7mm of clearance between the tire and stock suspension.

My last set was 17x7 225/45 with ET 40 as well, and I had almost 1cm of clearance.

Do you have another set of rims you can borrow, or try? There's no point to buy new tires if its the wheels that are the problem.

Maybe it is the wheels? Maybe the offset is higher than what you wrote? I'm having a hard time seeing an ET42 not clear. It SHOULD...
