Smile Wiring aftermarket head unit and running wires

Hi All,

I have a 1997 lexus es300 and was planning on buying a double din 6.2 inch GPS unit. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this and if everything is plug and play or if a lot of re-wiring needs to be done. Here is a link to the unit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380607395361
The unit also has a back-up camera and I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how to run wires from the trunk to the radio. I was also thinking of installing a sub and this information would help.

Also if anyone has done something similar, do you have any idea where it would be best to run the GPS antenna to?

Thanks very much for any information you may have, much appreciated!

All you do is get a wiring harness for your year and model. The radio will come with a harness and its color coordinated. Some wires u may not use. As for running the wire just take off the trim down the drivers side and run it under that then under the back seat. Its really easy. Not to hard.

I wish it was that easy...there are a few different ways to do it. Lots of posts on here describing exactly that, enough to make your head spin. It's a little more complicated than just getting the connector and plugging and playing. But that's just my experience...

Depends on whether or not you'll be using the radio amp or the factory amp. If using the factory amp it's as simple as getting a harness and hooking it up. If you intend to use the amp in the radio then you have to run wiring and will have to have a separate amp for the subwoofer.

Default thanks

thanks for all your replies, the information is much appreciated. I think i'll run the factory amp, the premium sound system sounds pretty good, I dont think the amp in the head unit is anything special.

I was having a hard time finding posts on it, any links you can direct me too?

much appreciated!

I found two wiring harnesses on this site, but wasn't sure which I would need: http://www.installer.com/cars/by_car.php?carid=3254 , part no 70-8112 and 71-8112.

Thanks.

You want the 70-8112. you mate that to the aftermarket stereo harness then it plugs into the stock harness.

if I wanted to use the amp from the head unit, where would I run wires from? would it be from the head unit to the pre-amp in order to bypass the pre-amp? Is the pre-amp under the passenger seat? Also does anyone know how to take the interior apart to run a wire from the head unit to the trunk (the head unit comes with a back-up camera).

Cheers.
