Default 96 Es300 - AC Problem

Blows cold as ice first thing in the morning for probably 3-4 miles, if kept on low. Not positive but I think if i turn it up higher then it doesnt last as long. After the 3-4 miles starts blowing hot.

When it sits out in the sun, majority of time wont blow cold - but occasionally will but MAYBE for 1 mile.

Pretty sure its good on freon as I filled it last year. Any ideas? Thanks

Again, the best bet is the expansion valve.

can you expand a little bit? Im guessing someone else had this problem - sorry for not finding that thread. Any idea on cost to get it fixed or difficulty of replacing it? Thanks

The parts are cheap. $50 for both the expansion valve and the receiver drier (it's recommended to have it replaced also). Replacing the expansion valve, however, is somewhat labor intensive since you'll have to remove the evaporator, which is located under the dash, and the A/C system has to be vacuumed and recharged. A price range of $ 400-600 from an independent mechanic should be expected.

You will need to have the issue diagnosed properly. It is imperative that you have your AC pressures checked first. Failure to do this simple step will cause you to throw rand parts and labor at the car.

Sorry to be blunt, but stating that the refrigerant level was ok last year is totally meaningless.
