poor gas mileage
ive been reading that everyone is getting pretty good gas mileage on their new es350. so far, i've only put 130 miles on the car (car was purchased with 9 miles), and the dashboard display shows that on average, im only receiving 14.6 mpg, and the tank avg is 15.6mpg. im still on my first tank of gas that was filled up at the dealership. about 30% miles was driven locally and the other 70% was on the highway. is something wrong with my car's fuel consumption or is this typical for the first tank of gas?

Did you clear/reset your MPG? Just hold the button when you get to the display. Than drive around and see what you get. With only 130 miles and no reset on MPG, I wouldn't worry too much about that display reading. Also, I'm not sure if tank avg gets resets automatically every time you get gas?

yup, the car salesperson showed me how to reset the mpg and did it before i left the dealership. it also shows that i can go about 180 miles more until the gas completely runs out. so only 310 miles on 18.5 gallons of gas = 16.7mpg? ima go broke fueling up gas T_T

You can't even begin to measure actual gas mileage until 1) you've worn the car in a little, and 2)you measure by a whole tank. Start when you gas up. And don't go by the gauge on the information display. Do the actual math based on miles driven and fuel consumed. Then you can have a much more reliable measurement of gas mileage.

gas mileage does gradually get better... i drive 80% local and i'm averaging 20 MPG. If i had all freeway with no traffic, I can do 33 MPG (as i filled up one night from the valley and drove 20 miles home at night time). Also, it depends on your driving habits.... If you accelerate before a red light, you wear your brakes and get less MPG. Punk kids around here do that all the time. I must say, this car does extremely well on highway.... it does about 4 MPG better than my old Miata, which was 1/2 the weight and 1/2 the HP. Now that's pretty impressive.

I wouldn't worry to much about that. I had a simillar problem before.
When we first got our car, the dashboard display showed only 14mpg and now it displays 19-20mpg average for City Driving Only(I've put little more than 1100 miles now).

If you have the car idling, it will register gas mileage as 0 mpg.
Sometimes, if you take a long time to warm up the car, or if the car was tested in idle for smog checks prior to your purchase, it will count that time to average your mpg reading.
If your car was tested in idle for half an hour or so, it can greatly affect the mpg reading.
Reset it and all should be more accurate...

I've got almost 3200 miles and my MPG is 25.8 with mixed city and highway driving (about 40:60). Now it's not LA city driving (traffic), more like suburban driving (stop signs and signals on streets with speeds of about 35-40).
Speaking of "Suburban", I was cut off today by a woman in a white "Suburban" who I guess didn't see me. I got next to her and gave her the "thumbs up" (actually I used my pinky). She chased me for about 6 miles at a leisurely pace. When we got to my off ramp she pulled up next to me and asked what was up (in not such a nice tone, I'm omitting the expletives). I told her she cut me off, which she promptly denied. I sarcastically replied, "Of course you didn't, you are driving a Denial. It says so right there on your car" as I pointed to the word Denali on her door. I do not think she was amused. So, watch out for a 5'0", 100lb woman in a 2005 or 6 white Denali on the 101, on the peninsula, with the mouth of a truck driver.

2. I drive with the MPG meter open on the dash. It's an indicator of how I am doing.
3. I make a serious attempt to drive the machine like a luxury car rather than a street rod.
In other words, it's a conscious decision.
