Unhappy Gas Mileage Going Down

Hi all. Just had 250h for couple weeks now, wife drove car for over a week and got, what I thought, was good gas mileage. I filled car up this weekend (only used 6 gals.) and reset gas consumption and driving history. Now my wife is noticing her gas consumption has gone down to 28 miles per gallon average, was averaging 34.6!!

cruising range was set to 477 miles! That's a good thing, was 370 at last small top off.

She only drives 4 miles to work, could that be the reason her mileage is suffering? Maybe the car does not warm up properly, etc...

Please, can anyone, with some experience, help us get better gas mileage.

Thx, BeavLexus!!

We've had our HS for 2 years. City mileage(stop and start driving) is around 3-5 miles less than cruising on the highway. We have ave. 33+ mpg over the 2 years in a very Urban area (Los Angeles). Your initial mph makes sense. Obviously there are ways to tweak your mileage, but I believe you are well within the normal driving range (mpg).

I just had the oil changed to full synthetic and tires inflated to 34 front and 33 rear, hope I get better results. I believe when weather warms up, things will change or my driving habits improve with time !!

THX.

Same thing happened to me when I first got the car, first 2 fillups were way over 30 then went down to 28. LOL, I accidentally took the car out of "ECO" mode, while trying to press another button.

It's tough to get any sort of good mileage out of any car in the winter when its cold out.

The best way to figure out your real mileage numbers is to forget the computer in the car for a while and just divide the gallons used at your next fill-up into the miles driven using your trip odometer. (reset the last fill-up).

If you want tips on how to get the best you can out of the HS, try reading this forum. Page back to the beginning and read forward looking for the "mileage" threads. A lot of the best can be found here from the earlier posts.

Here's one from another site to get you going:
http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26774

Search the Prius forums for some good mileage tips, as the basic operation is the same. Don't forget the Camry Hybrid forums too.

BTW, I'm getting just around 38-40 (high or low) in the winter on the hills of Western PA, which can be as bad as the hills in San Fran, CA. I hope to do a consistent 42 or more in the warm weather, hopefully. And if I lived in a flat area, I bet I could beat those numbers.

The HS can be many different cars, depending on how you drive it. Especially under 40 mph.
