I have a '98 ES300 and the trunk will not open with the key remote or the button on the dash. I've checked the fuse and also inside the glove box I still hear the "click" sound when I press either button. Was wondering what the part I would need inside the trunk to release the lid to open. I've had to open the trunk with the key and would like to get it fixed where I don't have to stop the car every time I need to get something out of the trunk.

Where do you hear the click sound, is it from inside the car? If so that's probably the relay.

If the click is coming from the trunk, the solenoid sounds like its trying to disengage the latch.

Open the trunk, and stick a screwdriver in the latch to engage it. Press the button and look closely at the latch to see if you see anything moving as it disengages the screwdriver. If not, there's no power going to the solenoid and it could be an electrical issue. Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the solenoid connection.

I had the same problem, the wires that go along the trunk hinges start to seperate or corrode from constantly moving when you open and close the trunk, I paid $50 to get it fixed at my mechanics.
