Default Trans jerks when it's warm

My cars jerks moderately when shifting from Park into Reverse, especially when it's warm. Any thoughts?

You check fluid color, level, and smell?

Open the hood and look at the engine while shifting out of "N" you may have a failing motor mount -- engine strut. The engine should not move very much.

Other than that -- it is most likely the transmission ....... other then checking the fluid - not much you can do.

check the fluid. it could just be low. are you throwing any codes? if the fluid is burnt id say its your clutch packs. but it could be a few different things.

No codes, fluid doesn't look burnt.

Just a thought... if you do have to replace an automatic transmission on these cars, is it doable for a DIYer? And how hard is it to find a replacement? I'm guessing since this car is based on the Camry, there must be thousands of them.

Do you think it could be the motor mount, not the trans mount?

I would also check the "barbell"-looking engine mount on the top of the engine, passenger side. That's a common mount that wears out, and it's easy to replace.

Also, one thing I noticed when I changed my transmission fluid (simple drain and fill) was it did seem to shift much smoother when I went from Park to Reverse or Drive. The fluid itself didn't look bad, it was just due for a change.

Since the car is FWD with a transverse mounted engine the transmission and the engine are one big component with many mounts. So I'm talking about any/ all of them.

You can easily see the engine through the windshield with the hood up -- see what teh engine does when you shif in and out of park -- F and R.

The engine should not move much -- you could also have a bad drive shaft -- but they would most likely make noise at other times.

Good point. My dogbone mount looks good, but it seems to me that there's an excessive play when I shift into reverse. Maybe the rubber is worn out.

What fluid brand/type?
