Torn CV boot but no noise???
I just found out that the driver's side CV boot is torn. There isn't much greese left in there (can see the axle) but doesn't seem completely dry.
*EDIT*
I just drove the car and when going straight or turning in a usual matter, no noises. But, when I stop, turn the wheel all the way, and slowly start out, I hear low griding noise coming from the wheel area.
Can I just repack the boot or is that asking for trouble down the road?
Also, how hard is it to replace it? Any special tools needed other than the ball puller?
Thanks!

It really isn't much more expensive to have the entire axle half-shaft replaced. I'd say that you're better off to have the half-shafts replaced so you get new boots AND joints. I paid just over $500 to have both sides done, and it would have been $460 to do the boots alone.

I have the same issue. Nothing seems wrong but the dealer says the CV joint boot is cracked and needs to be repaired. Quite an expensive repair bill.....combined with the other repairs suggested, we sometimes wonder when we'll replace it. One thing's for sure, the repair bill is much higher than the value of the car right now.

I checked the passenger side and it looks like that was has been replaced already . It has a different brand axle (sticker still on, GNK? GKN?) and the boot was in perfect condition. I guess I should have the axle replaced. I plan to do this myself and hopefully, the wheel won't fall off while I am driving. The lowest price I got so far is from NAPA for 89.95. Is that pretty much the lowest? It's brand new btw, not a remanufactured one althought I wouldn't mind paying less for a reman one.

I did mine. It costed about $75+ per axle with cores exchanged at Autozone. (Outer part only). Took like 1hour 30 minute for each side. Air powered tools are handy, some sockets and a plier (for that ring at the inner part of the axle (close to the tranny).
