Mercedes' global sales climb twice as fast as BMW in Q1
MUNICH (Bloomberg) -- Mercedes-Benz boosted sales twice as fast as BMW in the first quarter, moving the brand closer to clinching the lead in the world's luxury-car market for the first time in a decade.
The Daimler luxury unit's brand deliveries soared 13 percent worldwide to 483,487 vehicles through March, data from the automaker showed last week, compared with a 6 percent increase to 478,743 cars for BMW Group's namesake brand, announced in a statement today.
Sales of third-placed Audi rose 4 percent to 455,750 in the first three months, the Volkswagen Group unit said in a statement today.

comparing rates of increase is lame statistics designed for PR purposes. as stated, mercedes sold 483487 vehicles compared to bmw's 478743, which means mercedes sold slightly less than 1% more vehicles than bmw, hardly reason for a press release.

Subaru's sales have had breakneck 'increases' each month and year but I don't think Toyota (ok bad example because they have a stake in subie) or Honda loses sleep about Subaru's sales levels.

BMW will be fine of course, they're in the midst of launching their own product onslaught with the G platform vehicles.

The difference is Harald Krueger is losing sleep over MB's sales increases. The pressure is on over in Munich and he's getting hammered by investors. They weren't particularly impressed by his recent investor presentation.

Rest of it is PR and sales BS One could interpret that 4,744 as 0.01% more sales for MB compared to BMW.

They probably want to know about how the competitors are doing, but shouldn't they care more about their performance, profit and operating expenses? Doesn't matter if they sell cars twice as many as BMW, if they don't make money, they are out of business.

yes of course... but since these manufacturers are so similar, it is all tied in. So Daimler had 9 billion in operating profit last year while BMW had 6 billion.

Daimler does a lot more than build cars. i believe they have a stake in Airbus for one thing.
and being '#1' only means something if they're very similar companies, which they aren't.
don't see bmw with a successful line of vans and trucks?
