Welcome to CL.

You've really got an interesting case there. I think this is the first time I've ever heard of something like this happening. I really don't have much idea of what caused it, except do you know if your car was ever in a floodt? Water could have come up or inside the car, under the dash, and corroded parts of the steering column, causing some parts and covers to work loose....that's the only thing I can think of.

You might try posting this in our maintenance or GS forums and see if they have any other ideas. But you may (?) end up having to get it towed to a repair shop.

^ I was thinking the car had been in a bad accident and somebody did a hack job repairing it. Steering column and entire linkage should have been replaced, or car should have been written off and crushed.

Although that's just speculation.

Good thing that didn't happen while you were doing 75+ on the highway

Good point. I had not considered that.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing...but I'm sure he probably feels more relief than we do.

I'd like to see pictures under the hood. Did something come loose on the other end that caused the shaft to drop?

slide it down into place. i think there was a bolt hole (i think it was a 10mm) that holds that into place.

It has to be pushed back in place from the steering wheel and the steering assembly below. My guess is the reason why it wont reach is because your steering rack below is sitting lower than it should. Have you had any work recently under the car to slide the rack forward?

No dude theres no bolt im almost positive, theres no hole it looks like its just pressed in, and i tried to pull the shaft down but it really hard then i accidently pulled it up and it went further into the steering wheel and now it about a inch away and wont come down period

The cars lowered on coil overs would that matter?

My mecanic said the motor in the steering colum is no good and got stuck and all the pressure was on the cuplid which made it seperate, he said this is rare the car must of been in a accident before i got it

I had this happen to me before. It's what allowed the telescopic steering wheel adjustment to work. There is a bolt that keeps it from sliding all the way out I believe or a bracket that keeps it together
