Toyota to Sell Mazda2-Based Model in North America
Toyota will soon add another model to its North America lineup, based on the Mazda2 sub-compact.
In a joint statement, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Mazda Motor Corporation have announced plans to partner on this new model, with production beginning in 2015 at Mazda’s all-new plant in Salamanca City, Mexico. Total production of the new, unnamed model is pegged at 50,000 units a year, amounting to a third of total production at the new plant.
The partnership comes as Toyota searches to further expand its model lineup in North America, while Mazda seeks to offset costs of its new plant through finding production efficiencies and economies of scale.
What makes the arrangement unusual is that the Mazda2 fits into the sub-compact segment where Toyota already sells the Yaris with considerable success.

Im so confused by this. I guess maybe a new future Scion model? Isnt Mazda suppose to stop selling the 2 in america due to low sales? And isnt the Mazda2 built on the same chassis as the Ford Fiesta?

Mazda’s plant in Mexico is scheduled to start production within the fiscal year ending March 2014, with Toyota investing an appropriate portion of production equipment costs and development costs related to the Toyota vehicle and also an appropriate portion of costs related to the plant’s production-capacity increase.
Maybe sedan version?
Yaris will be imported from Europe in 2013, and Europe does not have sedan version.
