Post Nissan to make next NY taxi

Huge win for Nissan, congrats!

Nissan has won its bid to become New York’s 'Taxi of Tomorrow', a project established to find a replacement for the city's iconic 'yellow cab'.
The Nissan NV200 taxi will be produced at Nissan’s facility in Mexico and is a modified version of the firm’s current compact van.

Nissan will provide the taxis from the end of 2013 in a deal which will last until 2023 and is also set to introduce up to six electric Nissan Leafs next year for taxi drivers to try out in a pilot scheme.
Features of the new taxi include a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine, “low-annoyance horn with exterior lights that indicate when the vehicle is honking,” transparent roof panel and a mobile charging station for passengers.

Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares said, “Nissan is proud to provide the next generation of taxis for the City of New York.
“The NV200 taxi will give Nissan the opportunity to showcase our dedication to vehicle quality and urban mobility to more than 600,000 passengers every day.”

The project to find a new New York taxi was officially started in 2009 by the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

Sweet. Wonder if they will still do the Cash Cab game show in it.

Pretty sweet, having a 10 year contract to supply cars to NYC taxi fleets is pretty amazing, I have been in the Sienna, and I really like the roominess of the minivans.

They should be electric and work with this sweet new battery swap technology. If they can work in Japan's and NYC's cabs theyll be more than ready for regular street use.

sure, it is same class of vehicle, just much much newer concept that won van of the year in 2010 in europe... Ford Transit Connect is old, ancient... based on first generation focus platform. Here in Europe, I see a lot more of Skoda, VW, Citroen, Peugeot and Fiat vans than Ford.

Fugly! I will gladly pass up a ride in this and wait for a Crown Vic, Prius, Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid or even a Sienna taxi instead.

I thought that all NYC taxis had to be hybrids from now on....it only makes sense.
