Default Why a 45 series tire on an LS 460L?

My son in law has an '08 LS460L with 19" 45 series tires.
I find the ride to be great until he hits some bumps and now I know why it's a bit rougher than the car should be on bumps.45 series tires are to low profile for a luxury car like an LS.
Heck, the IS 250 has 45 series tires. My '10 RX has 60 series smooth riding tires up from the 55 series on my '09 RX..

because they look better comestically...even the 60 series tires on the standard RX look dated to me, something from the 90s. I think most people are willing to trade the little roughness for "better" handling and appearance

We'll have to agree to disagree.
'Roughness' and 'handling' shouldn't be a terms used when it comes to a LS460L.Smooth ride is important. The car is a boat.It doesn't handle and 45 series tires really don't help.
I don't think many would notice any appearance difference with a 50 or 55 series tire in the 460L.
Maybe the Sport version LS but not the 460L or even 460.

Touring package which the 19" comes on is suppose to be for better handling. Regular LS has 18"

He must has optioned to get the 19"s because as said, the stocks are 18 inchers, though may also be 45 series, im not sure.

Aspect ratio alone is nothing without knowing the width of the tire.

Making a general statement regarding to sidewall aspect ratio without considering the width is pure NONSENSE. We have 45 series tires with thicker sidewalls than many 50-series tires.

your son in law is driving a ls460l with touring package, unless he got the wheels as aftermarket equipment. that is more about handling than ride comfort. other ls460 are with 18s and 50 profile tires, providing more cushion for comfort.

and i agree with henry, profile is an aspect ratio.

His 460L is completely stock.
Great looking stock 19" rims.He going to go with a 50 series Michelin Primacy's.
He my go 245/50-19 for a .5" more sidewall height, same width and +2 MPH at 65 speedometer difference.
Still can't see the handling thing in a 460L.It's a boat but does have the adjustable suspension option.
The LS460L ride is smoother than my 215/55-17 tire ES350 but over bumps,it feels virtually the same and it shouldn't.

so why did he get the Touring Package and then complains about the ride quality? Its geared towards better handling, thats the sacrifice that has to be made. If you want the most comfortable ride youll have to go back to 18" to get the most sidewall.

He bought a loaded '08 silver/black LS460L that listed for $82K with 6800 miles for $57K.
He's not complaining but if he can get a softer ride,he's going to go with it.C'mon, how much so called handling can possibly be lost on a 460L?

I'm so glad you're not my father in law because I have 19" and 35 series profile and on Bilstein PSS coilovers. Oh my 3.76 final gear makes my engine rev higher constantly, so you might not like the increased NVH.

Some people want comfort, some people want their cars to look better (well, sometimes just different), etc.

Oh my...

It's actually my s-i-l's idea.
He just asked me for my opinion.
We're more the comfort mode type.

Yeah, some seem to forget that the aspect ratio (middle number) is the percentage of the tire width. I always wished that they actually measured sidewall height in mm and used that. That would make for an easier system to compare tire sizes. Must be a reason they use a ratio though.

People expect bigger wheels as they move up to higher models. That's part of the deal. The original LS had 16" wheels. That would look silly on an LS today. Most compact economy cars come with 16's today.

And imagine having thick sidewalls on a 19" wheel. The tires may rub the fender liner unless the car gets raised up, but then that looks even more rediculous!
