Car Stickers To Display Crash and Rollover Ratings
Date posted: 09-11-2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The crash test results available on the Internet will now be appearing on new car stickers, according to new U.S. government guidelines.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said manufacturers will be required to display federal crash test and rollover ratings on their window stickers starting with 2008-model-year vehicles.
The new vehicle price stickers will contain NHTSA safety ratings in three areas: front crash, side crash and non-destructive rollover tests. All three tests will use the five-star rating, with five stars being the safest. The sticker will also include a special warning symbol if a crash test raises a safety concern, such as a test dummy's head striking a window during a side-impact crash.
Several automakers, including Honda and General Motors, already put the information on the window stickers.
What this means to you: The new rule will not only standardize how information is displayed, it will put more pressure on automakers that are lagging behind in safety to get up to speed.
