Default Supra swap questions

So my next project is going to be a jdm supra 2jzgte vvti 6speed in an sc300. I am wondering what the best year of sc I could get to make it the easiest? Ive read that 98 and up are the most compatible with the gte vvti since they came stock with a ge vvti. But they are all auto. I want to use a 97 manual sc.
The plan is to have the custom wiring done by tweak'd or sombody like that. and get a custom driveshaft needed for the swap from drift motion. What else is needed for the swap?
And is there a good standalome ecu option for this setup that would be good to tuning it and not having check engine light? Because ive read alot about ecus out of vvti's that couldnt be used over here for some reason. Ive spent a lot of time searching cl for the answers I need, sorry if this has been already covered.

Do you have emissions testing? If so, go with 95 or lower because you won't require a diagnostic port test (JDM fails instantly). 92-95 is OBD1, 96+ is OBD2

Make sure that the ECU doesn't have the immobilizer (the ECU model that does NOT have it is Model# 89661-3A470), make sure that the engine is rear sump, and if Tweak does your harness you won't have issues with CEL.

I usually just register cars that wont pass emissions at my parents vacation home. Which doesnt do emisions.

Also what is CEL? And if I can find an ecu without an imobilizer, can it be fully tuned over here or what? It seems like standalone would almost be easier

You can tune a stock ECU, but you would need an SAFC, MAP-ECU2 or 3 or something of that nature that will override the stock ECU which is pretty adaptive. CEL = Check Engine Light.

If you want to fully tune it, go with an OBD1 car and go with a standalone ECU (AEM, Haltech, etc)

Okay thanks for the advise. So why do you recomend using an obd1 car for a full on tune as opposed to the obd2 newer cars? is it just because theres no diagnostic port or what?

just overall easier integration. It's up to you and the tuner in the end which is best for you.
