hey guys i have also been experiencing this start up clatter noise and also brought it in for the infamous dash rattle...tech said that the start up noise was due to a needed oil change...so they fixed the dash rattle and i got the dash fixed...but it still has the start up clunking noise...not sure what to do...i also showed them the noise but they said it was normal...something about valves resetting...

Is it a clatter, or more like a 2-3 second "ratcheting" type of sound ..... then the regular injector clatter of this engine?

I will try and do a Video/Audio recording of mine tomorrow and post a link.

The noise in question is unmistakably non-normal. I liken it to taking an empty plastic milk jug and putting a couple feet of chain link in then ripping it out as fast as I can. That "ratcheting" sound is what the engine sounds like. It goes away within about a second. It's distinctly different from the direct injector 'tapping' sound.

I can't believe they said it was due to a "much needed oil change". That's disgraceful. If anyone needs specific information on this issue, the Master Diagnostician that diagnosed the issue was Sal at Hennesey Lexus of Gwinnett. I'm sure he would be happy to speak with a service advisor or tech from another dealership. He was a very nice fellow.

Default Rattle upon startup?

Lately, I've noticed a slight rattle coming from underneath the car, only at start-up. Almost sounds like a vibrating heat shield or something, and only lasts for a second or less. Anyone else noticed this? I've got my 15k coming up in a bit and will have it checked out then, but in the meantime, lemme know if this is a recurring issue with any of you please.

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? Not sure if that could cause the rattling.

Mine has just recently started.. Been about two weeks and now its getting more frequent. My only concern is.. when I take the car to the dealer on Friday they won't be able to reproduce the sound.

However I want it documented that the car is having issues so should anything happen in the future I can atleast say "I told ya so!"

It sounds like a clatter and it lasts for like two seconds and then its gone. Its usually my first start up in the morning, or mid-afternoon when I go to lunch or leave for the day.

Yup, that's what I'm experiencing. And it's usually just the first start-up of the day. I can't duplicate it if I try restarting.

FYI, all stock.

Yes I am all stock too. I read somewhere that someone had issues with their VVTI device. I hope that is not the case.

Have the same rattle issue. It just started about mile 16k or so. I usually crank the car before the drivers door is closed and it sounds like it coming from under the car about where the oil tank is or more to drivers side.

I agree it just happens once on cold start for about a second, afterwards it doesn't do that on restart. Later in the day, after work, it will happen again, but after car has rested.

Last oil change I performed at 17.5k, I looked under there for something loose but didn't find anything. Wonder if it's a bolt to a panel under the car coming loose. I've not heard it in a few days, but I'm always listening for it now. I guess I'll look more out my rear view mirror to see if parts are falling off also.

I'm all stock also.

I had the issue for about a year. It got progressively worse. It was a faulty VVTi controller. The link to the post above has an explanation starting at about post #67. There is an extensive discussion of this issue there.

Since then, I haven't had the noise.
