The First-ever Lexus Subcompact Luxury Crossover

Up until this year, the smallest crossover that Lexus has had on offer has been the Lexus NX compact crossover SUV, but that has changed now. Enter the new Lexus UX – the first-ever Lexus subcompact luxury crossover. Plans for this crossover have been underway for quite some time now. Lexus had launched the Lexus UX concept at the Paris Motor Show back in September 2016, so the entire luxury auto industry has been eagerly waiting for the launch of the production version of this new small crossover. The Lexus UX is indeed a welcome sight, with bold, provocative exterior styling that suggests a sporty character. This crossover also boasts a sublime, masterfully crafted interior with a long list of desirable standard/available features. This crossover also promises impressive performance, noteworthy practicality and utility, and high fuel efficiency. Therefore, it offers an intriguing package that is worth considering for those who fancy small crossovers.

Here are some of the reasons why the UX is an excellent addition to the current lineup of Lexus vehicles.

Lexus Now Matches Its Major Competitors

Up until now, luxury vehicle manufacturers like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have enjoyed dominance in the subcompact luxury crossover segment with their small crossovers i.e. the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Audi Q3. However, with the Lexus UX, Lexus now gives small premium crossover customers more choice. Lexus also effectively cements its status as a formidable luxury auto brand with this small crossover. The Lexus UX matches its competitors in many aspects e.g. performance, technology, practicality, utility, safety features, and refinement.

A More Car-like Option

There are many people who like SUVs but do not want to give up car-like driving dynamics. If that is you, then the small Lexus UX is just right for you. It offers a blend of both aspects in a well-put-together package. Yes, the other Lexus crossover SUVs also deliver car-like driving dynamics, but they can’t beat the Lexus UX in this aspect.

The Lexus UX is built upon the GA-C version of Toyota’s new global architecture (TNGA) platform. According to Lexus, this platform gives the Lexus UX the lowest center of gravity of any crossover in its segment. This means that the Lexus UX is sure to feel quite stable even when cornering sharply or when you have to make aggressive maneuvers. This platform is also quite rigid thanks to the use of high-strength steel that has been hot-stamped and laser-screw welded in key locations. The weight distribution on the GA-C platform has also been optimally done to help enhance athleticism. This platform’s enhanced rigidity also makes for a more solid driving feel. Also worth noting is this crossover’s fine-tuned steering and suspension systems. It features an advanced electric power steering system that facilitates crisp, immediate responses to steering efforts while providing ample road feedback so that you feel connected to the road. The Lexus UX also features a MacPherson-strut front/double-wishbone rear suspension system that enhances handling while delivering super-smooth rides. Therefore, the Lexus UX is hard to beat when it comes to car-like driving dynamics.

A Fuel-efficient Option

The Lexus UX is also a great addition to the Lexus lineup because it offers crossover lovers an exceptionally fuel-efficient luxury crossover option. When you have to cover long distances on a daily basis, fuel efficiency in your vehicle of choice really matters. This is one of the things that the folks at Lexus tried to address in the making of the Lexus UX. As far as platforms go, the GA-C platform is quite light, and this greatly contributes to the crossover’s fuel efficiency. The Lexus UX 200 also features a 168-horsepower 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that boasts advanced fuel-saving technologies like multi-hole direct fuel injectors and intelligent variable valve timing. The Lexus UX 250h hybrid delivers even better fuel efficiency thanks to its hybrid engine that pairs a 2.0-liter gas engine with an electric motor. This hybrid powertrain also features a lightweight transaxle and power control unit that is fashioned to reduce power loss. Both of these engines pair with a ‘Direct Shift’ continuously variable transmission that is also designed to enhance fuel efficiency. Unlike conventional CVTs, it features an additional gearset that comes into play when the vehicle is starting off from a stop. Because the transmission does not tax its belt mechanism and pulleys when the crossover is starting from a stop, it helps to reduce fuel consumption.

Great Value

The Lexus UX also offers great all-around value. It features a refined interior that is sure to take your breath away. It can be had with exquisite quilted leather upholstery that is inspired by sashiko, a traditional Japanese quilting technique. It can also be had with different grain patterns and tastefully selected color options. This crossover also features advanced technologies, one of them being an air vent system that is controlled by a single knob. Using the knob, you can widen the vents and switch on the air vent illumination system. The Lexus UX crossover also offers advanced safety features, one of them being the Lexus Safety System+. The safety suite includes a Pre-Collision System (PCS) that is designed to recognize pedestrians on the road, even at night. When the crossover is likely to collide with the vehicle in front or to hit a pedestrian, this system applies brakes automatically to prevent the collision. The Lexus UX can also be had with an available Lexus Co DRIVE package that includes Lane Tracing Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control technologies. There is far more that the Lexus UX has to offer us.
