Formidable Competition

Lexus gets a lot of flak for not building cars that "compete" with the many various German performance machines. But is it really deserved? Sure, Lexus many not bother to participate in today's horsepower wars, but they are building some pretty exciting rides nonetheless. One of them is the RC F Track Edition, a very cool car that YouTubers Carwow recently pitted against a series of German rivals in this awesome video.

German Quartet

Carwow brings along not just an RC F Track Edition for this drag race, but also a new BMW M4 and AMG C63 S. But just for fun's sake, they also borrow an older BMW M3 E90 and AMG C63 W205 just to see how they stack up against the newer competition. While the Lexus is obviously meant more for cornering than straight-line performance, it matches up pretty well in terms of power among this German quartet.

Power Play

The Lexus is also naturally-aspirated, like the older German machines in this test. The new BMW and AMG are turbocharged, of course. The RC F Track Edition cranks out 477 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque from its 5.0-liter V8. The old E92 M3 is powered by a 4.0-liter S65 V8 that produces 414 hp and 295 lb-ft, while the new Bimmer has a twin-turbo inline-6 that produces 425 hp and 406 lb-ft

Reigning Supreme

The Mercedes duo is quite similar, starting with the classic W204 C63 AMG and its 6.2-liter M156 V8 that produces 451 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. But in terms of absolute power, the new W205 C63 AMG S reigns supreme with its new M177 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that produces a healthy 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.

Old Beats New

The only thing that really matters in this comparison, however, is how fast these cars get from point A to point B. And right off the line, the Lexus gets a nice jump. But after the first few dozen feet, it's passed by the new M4 and its turbo power. Hilariously enough, the old AMG blows past the new AMG and is right on the BMW's tail.

Slim Margins

By the time the group reaches the finish line, the Lexus holds it place in third behind the old Mercedes and the new BMW. Our reviewer does note that the launch control on the RC F Track Edition is fantastic, which is why it had the advantage off the line.

Impressive Results

The numbers that separate these cars are rather slim, however. The M4 finished the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds, the old C63 took 12.6 seconds, and the Lexus was right there at 12.7 seconds. It beat out the new C63 S by a tenth of a second, which is undoubtedly impressive. So who says a new Lexus can't compete with the Germans, performance-wise?
