Powering the Future

The idea of alternative fuel powerplants going in the Lexus LS is nothing new. For years now, rumors have persisted that Lexus' flagship sedan would receive, at the very least, a hydrogen fuel cell option. But these rumors have pegged a debut of that technology ranging anywhere from 2017 to 2020. And yet, here we are, still waiting for the future to arrive. Except now, we've received confirmation that not one, but three alternative powertrains are in the works!

Three New Options, and One More Powerful One

That word comes from the LS'chief engineer himself Toshio Asahi. Speaking with Austrailia's Asahi reported that three alternative powertrain options - a plug-in hybrid, EV, and hydrogen fuel cell - were "all on the table" for the current generation LS. He also revealed that Lexus was looking at ways to boost power in the existing LS500h. Asahi stopped short of revealing when, exactly, we might see any of these new options.

The Future Is Coming (Fast)

None of which comes as a surprise, really. Lexus hasn't exactly been coy about their plans to expand hybrid/electric offerings moving forward. And the LF-LC concept previewed their interest in fuel cell technology way back in 2015. Lexus even admitted at the time that we might see this exact powertrain FCEV setup sooner than you think." Which many believe will be the year 2020.

When in Doubt, Turbocharge

Expanded and more powerful hybrid electric options would also allow Lexus to better compete with their German foes. The current LS500h produces a combined output of 354 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is adequate but not terribly exciting. Many believe that Lexus will ultimately adopt the non-hybrid LS' twin-turbo setup to the existing hybrid powertrain to make it more competitive with flagship Mercedes and BMW offerings.

Starting at the Top

The Germans are also a step ahead when it comes to all-electric drivetrains. And yet, we don't know much about Lexus' plans for an EV LS. Parent company Toyota recently announced a breakthrough in solid-state battery technology, which would presumably trickle down (or up) to such a model. And what better way to introduce this pricey new tech to the market than in a flagship luxury sedan?
