I don't think this looks tacky at all. It is only on the DRLs and the cops have never bothered me at all. I've had this on for a year now without incident. The amber turn lights are in the headlight housing and on the side mirrors. As long as you're not trying to use flashing red and blue lights, I don't see why the cops would even bother you.
