Reducing tire noise on 2nd gen GS4
Since changing from 16s to 18s and now 19s, every brand of tire I've tried is noisy and only gets noisier as the tires wear. I'm not talking about the defeaning roar when the insides wear on the front. I am talking about ambient noise levels -- stock vs. 18 and larger tires.
It's my hunch that this is largely due to 275s in the rear, that Lexus never anticipated in 1998-2002 what we would do with the car and that the insulation necessary for the larger tires was not installed until later models. These rear tires are like snow tires. And, yes, I've lowered the car, which puts me closer the origin of tire noise -- friction with the road surface.
Question #1: are the larger tires quieter out of the box on the newer models? Side question, do the newer models have more sound insulation?
Question #2: is there a way to increase the sound insulation in the wheel wells and trunk to reduce the ambient noise level with 18s and larger on 98-2002 models? How do the manufacturers control it with stock 18s?

I got 19" rims with 245/275 in the back running Falken ST-115 tires, these tires are super quiet, if you roll up the windows and close the sunroof mute your stereo, you can barely hear any tire noise at all.

The tires are brand new, and it's been the same with every brand I've run: Bridgestone, Goodyear, Pirelli. I'm talking about the low-pitch rumble, and maybe it's lowering the car and running coilovers that raises the noise level.
That's a great suggestion on spraying the trunk. The audio section on CL has a lot of detail on sound-proofing, and maybe that's the ultimate solution. I would prefer not to have to take the car apart to do this.
