Default Help With Offset Understanding

Ok, i've tried looking everwhere for help in finding the right size 20"s for my car, but can't find any information or help anymore. Anyways my question is, if a +38 offset will fit fine, then would a +40 or more fit fine, or is it the other way around, being that a +36 or lower fit better?

1) it depends on width as well. offset without width is meaningless
2) if 38 is fine, then same width 40 is fine. 36 might not. however you can't get anything higher than 38, after certain point it will hit something inside agian

the rim width is going to be 8.5.... so the lower the offset number the "higher" the offset is? what would be the highest offset you could prolly get away with, if we were to say 38 was "perfect". i'm so confused! so if the numerical value is higher, des that mean the wheel sticks out more?

with the same width, the higher the offset the more "inset" the wheel is.

however there is no "limit", i know nothing about the the es300 though to help you....
