umm good question, i don't knnow the 100% answer too. i have seen tire mounting close to a trillion times. from what i see, it's already a lot of force just to stretch out the tires to fit over the rim, so i believe the stretching alone would hold the tire in place already. and also, before they put the tire on, they put some stuff (liquid) on the two edges of the inside tire. i suppose those are glue type stuff coz' sometimes after install i see some leftover on the rim that i can rub off easy

The bead seat of the wheel keeps the tire on the rim. If you look at a bare wheel you will see 2 ridges on either side of the barrel section. The beads of the tires fit into the bead seat and then under the pressure of the air the bead section of the tire "pops" into a secure place on the bead seat. The liguid Romi sees is a lubricant that does dry a bit chalky.

Thanks Brandon. So the tirew starts off just a " little" too small, then is stretched over the rim. A combination of the stretching, air pressure and bead seat keep the tire on the rim.
Ohhh, okay, I've got it. Now I can sleep ;p
