suspension noises
need some help !
99 sc400 work completed (in order) new pads (ebc green) & rotors (fronts drilled & slotted) kyb shocks 4 upper shock mounts sway bar links all 4 sway bar bushings f&r (rubber) 3 sepatare check by 3 different shops for ball joint wear (all said all were ok) 4 wheel bearings & seals Daizen: rack bushings, complete front bushing kit, complete rear bushing kit, sway bar bushings, (bearings and all bushings done @ same time - major pain to do !) 4 wheel alignment - completely went into specs after all this still have a clunking in the front end when going over irregularities in road. seems lesser on freeways, but very noticable and irritating on city streets. doesnt seem to be much better than was before. shocks are much stiffer and might have actually caused to worsen. at wits end trying to figure out, cause & cure. been all through suspension section and cant come up with fix. am i missing something ? any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. |
Does the clunking still occur while having the foot on the brakes?
|
the repair shop should be able to reproduce the error on the lift ... have them place the car on the lift and put pressure on various areas with a manual lift until you can reproduce the noise
|
brakes on/off still the same. thought i found the problem in a previous post - but tried the brake loading yesterday - no real change.
did not have shop load suspension, however when had the ball joints checked, 3 separate shops said that all were good, based decision to change all bushings on arms w/good ball joints vs replace arms if had bad ball joints. i know that the bushings (new) are all good. seems to point to ball joints, but ...??? expected more harshness w/daizen bushings, are not horrible, like high durometer bushings would be, but now is considerably stiffer & much less "plush". again have been all over suspension section looking for a clue but have found none. |

will retorgue and advise

still noisey
retorqued both xmembers - front was slightly loose (1/4 - 1/2 turn), rear tight.
made some difference, but still have some noiseness, not so much on highway, but mostly over irregularites in cement roads (slight height differences in cement slabs). no difference brakes on/off. will welcome any ideas ! |
Noises !
someone out there MUST have some more ideas.
after all the work still noisy ! |
long shot but just thinking what parts tend to move and well I have had the inner fender wells rattle if the mounting bolts come loose. Also check your entire exhaust system for excessive play and movement. I see you put Daizen bushes in and I kinda recall on a old post about a washer/spacer on the LCA that if not re-installed would cause a rattle. But not sure if that was going to poly from rubber or vice versa. Curious as to your outcome.
Good Luck |
Is it thunking popping etc
|
is "clunking" as though something is loose in suspension.
see first post all is new (except ball joints) or checked several times by several different people. went back and rechecked ball joints and are NOT loose/worn. PERPLEXING ! |
After replacing my entire front end there was a clunking noise as well. I ended up having to retorque the UCA's to spec.
Also, check end links and sway bar bushings. |
thanks for the reply.
am bumbfounded !!! uca's are @ spec w/new daizen bushings, the end links & sway bushings (also daizen) are new |
You sure its suspension? Maybe motor mounts or something else loose in the front.
|
am 99.9% sure is suspension.
