then either they changed the master cylinder or whatever pressure settings. drive a 98/99 and a 01+, i could tell the difference right the way (so is my wife)

 

in +01 Lexus switched to brake by wire, so that maybe a contributing factor.

99 - Automatic brake distribution
00 - Brake assist
01 - Brake by wire

oh, indeed i am confused. in that case, maybe the difference i had been talking about is the brake by wire?

 

I find that most brake-by-wire system are overly sensitive. I dont like the feel of it. Too touchy to be honest

 

My brake assist is called down shifting In three years, I have only had to use it once. It really works too

i'm going to test drive a 98 gs400 this weekend hopefully
the main reason i think brake assist is useful cuz here in vancouver, there are alot of hills and alot of rain. combine that with not-so-good drivers and accidents are abundant. thats why i would want a 2000 gs400 instead... but i'll test drive one before i make my decision

 

I have a 98 GS4 and it isn't supposed to have Brake Assist, but in winter, on slick roads if I brake, and then let up on the brake and apply it again gently it brakes much harder than I am trying to, and if I push harder it REALLY brakes well, like it is getting a big boost of brake pressure to the brakes without the normal brake pressure on the pedal. Was wondering if they had something for brake assist back in 98? Or is that something else?

Only see it in snow, just never seem to recreate the same scenario on dry or wet.

 

Could possibly be that you have a late model '98 and it came with the '99 setup.
