Default Brake Fluid For Stock Calipers

i'm in the process of bleeding my brakes and i was wondering if i could get a good opinion of what type of brake fluid to use to bleed my brakes. i've read that many use ATE or Motul, but since i'm running on a stock system, would that be overkill? what other brands out there that i can get at an auto parts store that would suffice if i do not get ATE or Motul?

Thanks!

I'm using ATE in my car at the moment. I have stock brakes setup. I only needed 1 quart to completely bleed my brakes. It was a cheap $13 upgrade over the regular $7 valvoline stuff. No complaints from me.

Ford Heavy Duty Performance is a good one for the price, but I like ATE and Motul second (two best of the lot). Castrol LMA is also a good performer.

If you really have the cash and race a lot, Castrol SRF, but I don't recommend it for a daily driver.

From my experience, the ATE lasts longer than both the Toyota fluid and the Valvoline Synpower I had used for some years. Brake fluid tends to contaminate a lot quicker where I am at than back in the States (other expats here confirm the same), so I am glad I can get access to a good fluid like ATE now.

wow, thanks Lexmex for the quick response.

i was looking at this:

http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/ate/a...blue_fluid.jsp

so i should have no problem using this even though our brake system recommends DOT3?

thanks!

1L should be more than sufficient, I usually have a little bit left in the can afterwards.

thanks Lexmex.

one more question, when bleeding the brakes, does the engine need to be running or can i just have it on the "on" position to enable the ABS pumps?

thanks!

On position works just fine for me in order to be able to better pump the brakes.

Here is an excellent write up by TunedRX300 on brake bleeding, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185967

I leave my engine on this time around when bleeding the brakes because if you leave it at the "on" position, the ABS motor will keep on running and eventually your battery will be drained unless you're quick enough. My battery died on me, but then again, I usually pump a lot just to make sure the fluid is gone.
