i think my shims were built into the pads, ,do i still need to use the old ones? Does this sound right? From the looks of it the shims were already on the pads but somehow built into them, and the guy at the store i bought it from said they already had shims on it. Need opinions/answers please.

^You only need one pair of shims. If your new pads came with shims, use those.

Hi Javy

Crap... didn't know pads came with shims....

I just ordered a set of shims because I didn't want to reuse my old shims. The black , anti-squeels coatings melted off ... can they be re-used if that's the case?

If the anti-squeal coating melted off, it would be better to replace the shims. The entire point of the shims is to reduce noise caused by vibration when braking. The reason I reused the shims in the DIY is because that was the first time the pads were replaced on that car, and the shims were still in serviceable condition.

Lightbulb FYI for all....

Legit OEM pads do not come with shims.. The OEM shim kits are sold separately..

Some aftermarket pad company's have been known to provide some sort of shim attached to the brake pad.. Which then means you would be reusing some of the OEM shims.. Usually the outer most shim plates.

A new OEM IS350 Front shim kit shown below.. Consits of 8 total plates...
(4 inner plates will have black coating / 4 outer plates will not)

"My Lexus" says that Lexus of Huntsville replaced front pads and rotors, do you think they would have done a full brake fluid flush/replace during this process? Fluid in MBC looks pretty clear, so......

Brake fluid flush is not part of the standard pad replacement service, so I'd bet a considerable amount of money they didn't flush your brake fluid...

My brake squeals when my car has been sitting for awhile. It squeals when going forward and reverse. Then after it squeal it stops for the rest of the drive. So when cleaning or replacing the pad is it necessary to bleed the brakes?

Do shims need to be changed everytime pads are changed? How to check if they're damaged or still usable?

My car is at the dealer now doing the TSIB L-SB-0011-11. I had very loud brake squeaking when i had a cold start and only going in reverse. This TSIB supposedly replaces the RH and LH front discs, replaces the front disc pads, and adds new anti squeal shims.

1. Does the anti-squeal lube go between the shim and the pad? Or just behind the shim where the piston contacts?

2. How does the "bite" or the low dust pads compare to your previous "high dust" pads? I bought a used IS350 and it doesn't "bite" initially. Not usually what I like. I believe they have the low dust pads as they don't cover my wheels in 2-3 days as other members have suggested.

THANKS and GREAT work!
