Ball Joint Issue??
'98 GS400 with 97K miles.
For the past week I've had a grinding metal noise coming from my front driver side wheel when going through dips in the road or slightly turning my wheels.
It gets worse as the temperature goes up, so for the first couple miles I dont hear anything. Luckily I have a short drive to work.
Either way, car is getting dropped off at the dealer after work.

I would have your front suspension checked out as soon as you can... safety is not something you want to mess with... does the steering or suspension feel different when the noice is occuring? if not, it might just be a backing plate loose, or upper strut support making noise. Although, swaybar brackets and ballsjoints are known to go bad on these cars... to put it short, have your suspension checked ASAP.

Suspension and steering do not seem to be effected.
We'll see what the dealer says tommorow. Hopefully its just the bearing or something simple. I took the wheel off and the noise was coming from that area, so I dont think its a ball joint.

I just purchased my 98' GS400 a few days ago. I was driving with the windows down and could hear the same noises. It would sound like a metal but not a heavy type, maybe more like an aluminum type clank sometimes when I run over a fairly large dip, pothole, or uneven road surface. The previous owner said he replaced the front lower balljoints and also tie rod ends also. I have the invoice for both parts. I know the they are there because the steering seems tighter and more responsive than the other GS400s that I test drove. Could it be uninstalled properly and hence the noise sometimes? Or is it installed properly but has that "break-in" noise of some sort?

Got my car back.
Ended up being the ball joint.
$220 installed out the door.
Glad to have the GS back, couldnt stand the ES they gave me, although the cooled seats are a nice option.
