Default Texas License Plates

So a forum member (can't remember who at the moment) indicated that license plates are no longer required on vehicles in Texas on the front?? Can someone clarify?

All I've been able to dig up is the fact that it is illegal but there is no punishment associated with it, so it's illegal but not enforceable to drive without a front plate?

Can't clarify, but I've been driving without a front plate on all my cars since 1996.

I say go for it.

In short, you found all there is about it...

When re-writing the law this year, they left out that it is punishable to not have a front plate, although said it is illegal. My gf has still received a ticket (and paid) for no front plate around Houston... She told the officer that it is no longer punishable and he replied "you shouldnt believe everything you read on the internet" because police officers are mostly arrogant, and feel they are all knowing, and enjoy power tripping... She may have been able to get it dropped but decided to just pay it.

For what its worth, i have only had state troopers ticket me for it, and i've never had to pay for it... just take a picture to court showing you have the front plate on. (I zip tie mine, take a pic, and remove it )

I heard you don't have to have one at the moment. Supposedly there was some kind of loophole where you can't get a ticket for driving without a front plate.

You still have to have them, I have been ticketed twice in the past 8 months for not having one by HPD.

I believe you still have to have them. I work on a military base and depending on who is working the gate will determine how much grief they give you. I even tried to explain to one that it is a State law not Federal law and the military base is Federal property so how can they give me a ticket for a State law. Since technically it is not illegal. He just gave me a dumb look and that night I ordered the tow hook license plate holder.

I recently got a ticket traveling from Austin to Houston. I emailed a pic of the plate reinstalled on my car and sent a $10 dismissal fee (fckin retarded) to them and was done with it. It's basically what they said. You still have to have a front plate DISPLAYED. Just stick it in the front windshield and print out an article. If you get pulled over again, just say you have them displayed like the law says.
