Signature problems....need help!

Hello all,
just looking for some help here. I am trying to put a picture from my computer on my signature like so many others here have. However, when I go to edit my options, and change the avatar, I try to open the file of my picture and nothing happens. I hit 'Submit Changes', and again, nothing happens. If I leave this area, and come back again, it is selected 'no' for avatars. Am I going about this completely wrong? Can somebody please help? I am at a total loss here. Thanks.
