Its still there if you wait a while they load (or red xs do) so nobody removed them... but I think its a good hint that it takes too way long to load / might be too big if this is happening (I haven't added them up from a total KB perspective).

 

Oh, and your signature smileys are hosted from offtopic.com which I read elsewhere is down right now (so they don't work) so they appear as little red 'x's.
