Default 2008 IS350: Intermittent 'Check system' and tpms lights

When I got two new tires from a trusted tire shop last week, I mentioned seeing an intermittent TPMS light so the mechanic got out a sensor and checked all for newly mounted wheels. All showed correct temperature, pressure, and all batteries were rated as OK. I even calibrated the tire gauge I used to check pressure each month.

Here's the weird thing. The TPMS and Check System lights are normally off and all generally works fine for the last month. Once on a short errand, both came on for about five minutes and then it went away. Three other times it turned on while I was driving in the afternoon on the interstate for an hour drive home. In each of those three cases, the lights turned on until I got home, then later that day they turned off again when I ran some short trips.

My tire shop said they need the lights to be ON when I stop by to detect any issue, but it's never stayed on longer enough to visit them.

Any idea what this may be or where to next investigate?

Check system has nothing to do with tire pressure, it means that one or more of the sensors are not detected. Are you still using the original TPMS sensors that came with the car in 2008? The sensors have a lithium battery with a typical life of six to ten years; if yours are 11 years old, they are on borrowed time.

After more investigation with my tire shop, the TPMS sensors all check out are have good battery levels and signal strengths. We checked everything twice and all look fine.

In driving since since I originally asked about this, I've noticed that the Check System and TPMS light seems to go on when the tires are hot. By this I mean they only turn on after I've been driving at least 45 minutes at highway speeds. Once I run some errands in town that involve parking the car for bit of time, the warning lights turns off.

Has anyone see this behavior before? Could a TPMS sensor be losing connection only when it's hot?

Did you check the spare tire? I believe it has a TPMS too

Check a different tire shop. One shop I went to showed all good and I went to another showed 3 dead. Replaced all 4 haven't had a issue since. Normally it starts popping up like that when the batteries are getting low but not completely dead

Just got the same "Check System" warning light tonight when on the freeway. Was very warm out. Going to tire shop tomorrow to see if it's the batteries. My car is also a 2008. Glad this thread exists.

Battery most likely on way out. Or age has gotten to the battery contacts.
