Default 99 LS400 Power Steering Issue

first off, let me say that yes, i did run a search on this, and got a lot of useful info, however what was posted still left me with a few questions. I have a 99 LS400, the power steering is making a whining/grinding noise when cold. I came across the very detailed thread of cleaning out the screen of the PS solenoid. however, I believe that was done on a 90-97 model and from the available pictures, as well as pictures found on google, my pump(?) and solenoid look pretty different that what was posted on this forum. I tried to remove what i think is the solenoid by removing a 12mm bolt, however the solenoid just turns left to right but wont come out... i dont want to force it and break something. my PS fluid did not look too low but i added some dextron III synthetic ATF fluid anyways. I cant tell if it helped at all due to the car not being cold. I wanted to make sure i am looking a the right part as well, and if there is some trick to removing it. any help is appreciated.

can't help you out with the solenoid , but that sure looks like a solenoid, lol.

but i have a 99 as well and I was having a similar PS noise at idle, I got rid of it by getting the old fluid out of the system and filling the reservoir with new ATF. Did a couple cycles of that. I can elaborate if need be.

Sometimes people fill the PS reservoir with PS fluid or the fluid in the system is super old.

There could also be air in the system.

How many miles are on the car ? Your reservoir was prob just a little low as these cars notoriously lose fluid through the idle up valve.

Yes that's the PPS (Progressive Power Steering) solenoid. It pulls straight out but be careful as there are 3 o rings holding it in place and if they are damaged you'll have to replace the entire solenoid $$$$!

The screen on 98-00 cars isn't quite as accessible as the earlier solenoids and I doubt cleaning it will fix your problem.

Default Replace fluids

When my 00 whined, I sucked all the fluids out, topped off with new fluid, started the car, moved steering wheel from side to side for 4 cycles slowly, turned off car, sucked fluids out, and topped with new fluid and so on for 5 cycles and it cured the annoying whine.

Yep, I'd replace the fluid with a couple of the above cycles. Lifting the car on stands will really help bleed the fluid once you refill it. Much easier to turn allowing for more fill left/right rotations.
