ES Insurance Question - CPO
Hi all:
I hope someone can help answer a question for me. The wife and I are looking at buying 2 CPO Lexus' in the 2014-2015 range. Right now we are looking at an RX and an ES.
When I spoke with my insurance company, a 2015 RX was quoted as less than my current car (2012 Pilot), but a 2015 ES was more than double what they would charge for the RX.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any potential explanation? My wife is now panicking thinking the ES is unsafe or something.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

Getting ready to renew by insurance this month. We pay once a year. Our 2013 ES300h is $30 less a year than our 2015 RX450h. Would these be your first Lexus's?
The 2015 Lexus ES family covers all the bases in safety. No matter which model you choose, ten airbags are standard—including front and rear curtain bags and rear seat-mounted side airbags, in addition to electronic stability control and all of its complementary systems like anti-lock brakes.
Additionally, Lexus Safety Connect wraps in roadside assistance, emergency assistance, a stolen vehicle locator, and automatic collision notification—although those services require a subscription (one year is included).
Several active-safety features are available as options on the ES models, too. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert can help see moving vehicles in your blind spot, or help see cross traffic when backing out of a parking spot. There's also a Lane Departure Alert system that includes an automatic high-beam feature; and the Pre-Collision System uses radar to anticipate a potential collision.
Safety ratings are excellent so far, with top 'good' ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) -- although the ES still hasn't been rated in the especially tough small overlap frontal category. In federal tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), gives the ES five out of five stars in all categories, except for rollover tests.
Great safety ratings, as well as an impressive set of available active-safety kit, altogether assures that these sedans are safety standouts.

Get quotes from other insurance companies, you'd be amazed how much difference there can be. We cut ours basically in half by just changing carriers.
Something was either inputed wrong or you need to find a new insurance company because it just doesn't make sense.

Insurance rates can very a lot depending on where you live, driver, car, age, and EVERYTHING else.
The only way to see what's best for YOU is for you to shop around.
We can all insure the same cars but each of us will not have the lowest price with the same company.
Just to add to this twist, I recently had a family member who switched from a nold 2004 Honda civic to a brand new 2017 model with full coverage, and the rates actually were reduced!
Never thought that would happen!

Is it noticeably more from the car you are coming from or is it more than other cars of a similar value? How much more?
I can understand moving to a new ES350 being a big jump if the car you are coming from is worth very little, but the idea that the ES is more to insure than other luxury cars seems incredibly odd to me. I would think the demographic that drives them tends to be older, safer drivers than other luxury vehicles in that segment.

Well I don't know what you all are paying, but I live in Louisiana and auto insurance rates are ridiculous... I have a 2013 ES and my premium every six months is 620.57 I do carry 250,000 / 500,000 which I'm sure boosts that premium a bit. I also have a 2010 4 Runner and my six month premium on that vehicle is 444.78 So car insurance here in the Bayou state runs me right at $ 2,130.00 a year.... OUCH!!!!

Thanks for the responses.
Freds, yes these will be our first Lexus'.
Wandl, I am in the DFW area. Where are you located generally? Wonder if it is a regional thing.
It is making the wife very hesitant about getting an ES. No logical explanation. Possible to get an NX instead of the ES. Has anyone had any experiences with those?

I read a report on MSN a few months back that said ES owners were more likely to get a ticket than most other cars, and the car most likely not to get a ticket was an IS. Go figure. That might factor in the reason why the insurance is so high for an ES in your area. I'm sure the insurance companies compile all kinds of data from your state DMV about the different cars, the age of the drivers and such.

We like our NX but that is an entirely different car with a different mission. The ES is a much quieter and smoother riding vehicle. I can't really say we favor one vehicle over the other, but the ES is more refined and feels more like what you would expect from the Lexus brand. In terms of insurance premiums, I believe they are similar in this region.
