Is RX300 more durable than Highlander?
Hi all,
I have been a Lexus RX300 owner for less than a month. I just learned that RX300 and Highlander use the same Engine. So I don't know if there is any advantage of RX300 than Highlander, since one belongs to luxury car and other is a common car. Is RX300 more durable than highlander? Would anyone point me out? Thanks.

The two share many parts which can be a blessing when it comes to repairs. The Lexus has more luxury features, better sound insulation and some higher quality materials than the Highlander but I wouldn't bet the 300 is more durable than the HL. Our cars are from the golden age of Toyota and both are superb automobiles.
Enjoy your car and don't worry if some hater rags on you for driving a gussied up Highlander. You will also hear it is nothing more than a pimped out Camry but in every case the comments will come from someone who wishes they had one.

Before we purchased our 2001 RX300 at 78k (has 93k right now), the one big issue we kept reading about for older RX300s had to do with a change made to the automatic transmission in the RX...something to do with removing an accumulator to allow it to fit within the RX chassis. Lack of the accumulator seemed to lead to AT failures, especially for the AWD models. Problem did not seem as prevalent for the 2001 and later years, and did not seem to occur at all with the FWD, which is what we ended up getting.
Of course there are vehicles of both types that have gone forever with no problems...what I mentioned above just seems to be what kept popping up in customer reviews as we did our research. My wife could not be happier with her RX . Will plan on doing the timing belt (with water pump, belts, pulleys, plugs, etc) at the 100k point.
