Colleague of mine just bought a Subaru Ascent.

My wife wants to check one of these out - however it seems the Ascent is plagued by 1st year issues. Looking at Edmunds consumer reviews, there are a ton of complaints on failed (or misbehaving) CVT tranny issues - several have had them replaced already.
Neatly packaged, a solid brand with good reputation and competitive gas mileage for not too much $$. Smart move by Subaru - this is almost as good as the B9 Tribeca

The B9 Tribeca was a horrible car, lasted 2006-2007 if I remember correctly. The grill and front fascia was almost immediately changed, the engine was upgraded to 3.6L from the anemic 3.0, and of course the name change to just Tribeca, which was a decent car with the changes and lasted through 2014.
I don't know if you ever got a chance to drive a Tribeca. I sampled a 2Gen version (2008-2014), and, even by my conservative standards, it was the very definition of Dullsville. Driving one was a complete appliance.....about as interesting as watching the paint on it dry.
