Bunch of us have removed the inner piece to allow it to be functional, it's really easy.

Pretty standard approach by manufacturers, American sporty cars
often had faux scoops for the style and some were even easy to
open up. Weather conditions are precisely why they didn't ship
already open. Some were just for posing, the tiny hood center
nostrils on a Pontiac GTO were at a low pressure, low flow part
of the body and likely would have pulled air out of the engine if
opened up! The trailing edge flap "Cowl Induction" of a Chevelle
was a work of engineering genius, worked, looked cool, sounded
cool and mostly kept out the snow etc.

it is functional. There's a small opening. If you wash your hood. Will notice some water drains into one of the hose. Pretty sure it's big enough of a hole for gases to escape. In your picture. That inner square on the right.

its functional. Think about it, if the hood has a heat shield and the air scoop doesn't , that means heat will be allowed to pass through the plastic membrane into atmosphere. I have seen on occasion heat rising from scoop while stopped in traffic. Will removing cover just leave the car susceptible to rain damage?

Lol. Ok. Do you think you could breath thru that hole ? Let alone a v8?? lol. Such an odd design IF it was meant to be active in pulling hot air out. Just sayin.
thanks for the responses.

yes, it can breathe through that. if you ever had any huge scoops , do you know there would be condensation that comes out of the vents? as if the engine is one fire or something? trust me, it looks bad and dumb when that happens. people will ask if your car is ok.

the scoop is enough. your background in car's aero design I'm sure is better than lexus' engineers.

when you are going 100 mph, the air with pressure sucked into the engine would push heat out of that small hole.

Is it small yes. Is it functional? "Technically" yes

Is the hood scoop the same on all models, 2015,2016 and 2017 ? I would agree that it seems as though it could have a better design with larger air flow. I had a 1999 Ram Air Trans am that had the opening in the hood that faced forward and the rain was diverted away inside the hood while letting the air flow into the engine. I'm looking into trading my RC 350 F Sport in on the RC F and I won't normally be driving at 100mph. I haven't seen a 2017 yet as no dealer in northern Ohio has one. Not that this will keep me from purchasing the car, but I do feel that it's disappointing to find out.
