2002 SC430 O2 Sensor Replacement
I have a 2002 SC430 with a check engine light on, when the code was checked it said the upstream driver side sensor failed. Purchased a new one and began removing covers etc to get to it. Purchased the special socket. Socket would not fit on all the way so I removed 2 bolts that held a heat shield in place. The socket then fit all the way on. Had to get a cheater pipe on the ratchet but could not bust it loose. I think the gap in the special socket began to spread apart with the amount of force I was having to put on it and it began to slip on the hex. I then unplugged the electrical connector and cut the wires to the sensor so I could get a deep socket onto the hex of the sensor. One click at a time I thought I was making progress, it never busted loose and never became easy but I thought it was moving, then it locked up tight. The hex stripped, the socket came off and it looks a little crooked at the boss where the sensor is threaded into the manifold like it pulled the threads.
Are there any options to bypass this to get the check engine light off?
I know one option is to completely remove the exhaust manifold on that side and either machine out the sensor base or replace the entire manifold.
This is my only car here so I really need to get it going ASAP.
Thanks for Any help
Jeff

Unfortunately, it looks like it time for a specialist to get in their to get it out. Sorry, I cannot suggest any other alternative. And, depending on your state’s emission rules (I’m in California where they are very strict) you may not pass a test without a repair and properly functions sensors.

In your case, i would not try to replace the sensor. My 04 Corolla had same issue, I just left it alone. When the smog check required, I disconnected the battery to reset the check engine light, ran the car for 30 miles. It passed. I just have to live with the check engine light on.
Others would oppose my solution, but it’s worked for me. You might want to elect the alternative. Good luck.

Same here, 04 SC and engine light has been on over 2 years - plus typical VSC and other light. There is some great info in our blog that confirms my P0051 code may in fact not be the 02 sensor, but, simply a split vacuum hose.... Haven't chased that possibility -- too busy!!!

Wow, thanks so much, Coleroad and iolmaster.. Probably had 48K on her when the light came on. So, looks like I continue with the lights or find the O2 sensor and someone to install. Appreciate the help, Gents.
