Question 2002 SC 430 replacement Key

Hi everyone, you guys so far have all been life savers, just last week you saved me from spending $500 at the dealership. Today I come to you with another dilemma. I own a 2002 Lexus SC 430, I currently have only key for it and the outer shell casing is beginning to crack. I purchased an after market key case +key, my question is after I cut the key do I just transfer the transponder from my old key to the new one? would I need to reprogram the new key?
Thank you all again in advance!!!!

That should be all you need to do is to transfer the transmitter. You can't reprogram the key, only the receiver in the car.

Will I have to reprogram the receiver then?

Avihi, you will need to program the key to your car once you swap the guts. I have attached the procedure to program the transponder. If the transponder isn't programmed your car won't start. You will only need the procedure on the 2nd page (actually page 1) The first page is for programming the remote which you won't need to do. Note, sometimes it takes more than one try to get it to work.

You might want to purchase a second key and transmitter...if the you loose your only key, your in trouble.

I didn't have to reprogram my unit after I changed out the key and transferred the guts over either.

The shop manual has the exact procedure Helo posted earlier.

There is more information about key code registration and it is called KEY REGISTRATION IN AUTOMATIC REGISTRATION

If your ECU is still in this mode, more keys can be registered just by inserting them in the ignition, this process will continue until the maximum number of keys are registered or you do the following.

Turn the ignition switch ON/OFF 5 times within 10 seconds using the already registered master key.

NOTE: A maximum of 5 master key codes and 3 sub-key can re registered.

NOTE: The key has 2 codes, the key code (immobilliser code) and the wireless code. Both of these types need to be registered.

Bottom line...if you insert the new key and it works, GREAT! But if it does not, you will need to perform the procedure. If the procedure does not work, then you are doing it wrong or you have too many keys programmed to the car and you will need to erase some keys, which is another procedure ;-)
FUN STUFF!!!

The little module contained in the key shell contains both the Remote Keyless Entry buttons, transmitter and battery plus the transponder chip. The transponder chip in not a separate item in the key blade shell. No programming is necessary to swap that module into another cut key blade shell.

+1

If you transfer the "guts" (three button electronic piece) to the new shell with the newly cut key blade, that's all you need to do. No programming necessary.

Programming is only necessary when you have new "guts."

As everyone has stated, no programming needed when you transfer guts to a new key shell.

BUT! Having only one working master key has risk. You need a working master key to enable additional keys to be programmed. IF Your only master key gets lost or gets damaged where it no longer can be used to start your car you are in for a very expensive solution.

Consider getting an additional master key now.

Just curious how much would it cost to buy and cut another master key? Can I do it myself?

Mine cost $45 for the cut after I purchased my own key off ebay.
