Takata air bag recall....survey
The Lexus dealer here in Tulsa, OK says they have to remove the dash to
replace the passenger air bag according to the recall. Not every dealer
does it this way. Since so many things are connected behind the dash, I'd prefer a dealer
that replaces the air bag from the passenger floor. Just wanted to survey
our members according to the following:
1: year of car
2: airbag replaced by removing dash or going through glovebox
3: any issues after the repair ?
4: days car was in shop
5: did you get your free loaner car and full tank of gas in your car
thanks for participating. just type 1: 2: 3: 4: 5: and your answers.

My dealer says they have done a bunch and the car stays with them for two days.
I have not had it done precisely because I rarely have passengers and I am worried that things could get messed up.
Can you indicate more about the two different repair methods? I'm familiar with the "remove the dash option." But you indicate passenger "floor" and also "glove box" for the other method.
While Lexus must hate this, the dealers must love it.

The passenger seat is removed. The technician lays on their back on the
passenger floorboard and accesses the passenger air bag by removing the
glove box and the blower fan motor. Takes much less time, and saves removing
up to a 15 year old dash. What are the odds that something gets scratched
or there's a rattle somewhere behind the dash afterwards: good

2 remove front seat, did not disassemble dash
3 none
4 dropped off at 1:00 PM, dealer called at 6:10 to say it was ready. Picked up next morning.
5 loaner car needed and gas tank full next morning.
Service rep says they never remove the dash. Always remove the seat and go in from the bottom.

Clearly someone is wrong here. Most people are saying that the dash does not have to be removed. Others say it does. Slingshot has an 06 like mine and the tech that did mine said they took out the seat and went in from under the dash. When I spoke to the dealer in Florida (I had mind done in North Carolina) he said with a safety recall they do not have any discretion in how it is done. They are required to perform the repair in the manner Lexus details. Of course this is to keep the lawyers happy. I have no idea why you would choose to remove the dash when clearly there is an alternative.

Just had mine done yesterday. I went to Lexus of Wilmington. ( I live in northern Delaware) The first question I asked the service rep was how he was going to do it, the glove box or remove the dash. I was impressed, he knew exactly what I was talking about. They go under the glove box. Got the car back and seems to be as good as new.
The car is 11 years old with 50K. The service rep said I should replace the timing belt. The factory recommendation is 7 years or 90K miles. So I had that done also. They said the belt was frayed. I never really trust these guys but It was probably a good thing to have done. I just pass that along to anyone with and older SC who is trying to decide to do it or not.
