Default Foggy/cloudy temperature display

This topic had a post a while ago but it seemed to fade out.....

The issue is the clear plastic display through which the air con/temp is viewed. Over time, the plastic display becomes cloudy and is hard to read in certain light. Cleaning the clear plastic display from the outside achieves nothing as the cloudiness appears to be on the inside.

The clear plastic display seems to be a sandwich construction (i.e. two thin pieces of perspex with some sort of film in between). The cloudiness seems to be in the middle of the 'sandwich', making it impossible to clean. Has anyone actually removed the cover to check the construction ?

The easy solution seems to be to buy a replacement clear display panel which is part of the overall air con/temp display cover. However, here in Australia, the cost of a replacement cover is in excess of $600 (for a plastic cowl cover measuring 6" x 4".....)

So, left field possible remedies are (in order off dodginess...):

1) with the cowl cover in situ, use a razor blade to carefully cut around the first layer of thin Perspex and peel it away. Clean the inside of the remaining layer of Perspex and hope that works

2) remove the cowl cover and repeat step 1)

3) remove cowl cover, cut out both layers of thin Perspex and glue in a thicker single piece.
Thoughts ???
