The water pump is part of the powertrain and hopefully will be covered if it is the culprit. None the less, best of luck.

Okay, mystery solved. The water pump is leaking and is covered under warranty. (I have to brush up on the warranty coverage) Lexus is going to replace the timing belt while replacing the water pump under goodwill.

Great outcome for a problem that occured prematurely.

Thanks to you all for all the information.

That worked out about $500-$600 in your favor

Not trying to be too cynical here, but did they actually say timing belt? Or the belt...meaning serpentine belt.

Just to add to what VVTiBob said...if it was just the drive belt that they're replacing...you'll want your timing belt changed after a catastrophic failure of your water pump as it will certainly cause premature damage to your timing belt!

Good point you're bringing up as clarity here is extremely important.

Here is what the Master Service Consultant said in the email: "Leaking water pump, gonna replace it and the timing belt. Then perform a block test. Should be done on Thursday."

I said: "Are these warranty items?"

He said: Water pump yes, timing belt goodwill."

The car is ready now. They often under promise and over deliver on timing.

This is an all around win because the timing belt needs to be removed for the water pump service anyway and it only costs the dealer $25 or $30. Pretty cheap goodwill. The technician would rather put on a new one anyway because he'll be able to see the alignment marks.
